People affected by landfill stink at Fleetwood urged to contact their GPs

It has been reported that some people have been suffering with effects ranging from nausea to headaches and even nosebleeds.

The problems have been linked to the landfill site, based at Jamesson Road, being opened up for use again after a period of closure.

Some have likened the smell to rotten eggs, others to rotten onions, while others have described it as a gas-like stench.

Operators Transwaste Ltd have been ordered by the Environment Agency to address the air pollution problem by May 15.

Dr Mark Spencer, the lead GP at the Mount View practice, the largest in Fleetwood, is among the doctors recording any health issues believed to be related to the odour.

Campaigner Barbara Kneale told members of online protest group, ‘Action against Jameson Road, the Fleetwood Landfill site gas smell’ that the GPs in Fleetwood were aware of the issues and ready to note symptoms.

There are additional concerns because Fleetwood, which has some of the most deprived wards in the country, has higher than average cases of lung disorder COPD.

Sign up for our free newsletters now Barbara said on the Facebook page: “Keep reporting symptoms to your doctors.

“The surgeries are keeping track of reported landfill related symptoms and Dr Spencer has been in contact with Public Health.

“We also have a symptom reporting site and a map of symptoms is being created with this data .”

She told the Gazette: “This isn’t just a horrible smell, it is an environmental problem which appears to be impacting on people’s health- and that makes it much more serious.” 

Earlier this month, protesters descended on the landfill site to demand action over the vile smell, saying it was making their lives ‘unbearable’.
